A Day In My Life In Mexico
What Everyday Life Can Look Like After Making the Move to Mexico
After 8½ years of living in San Miguel de Allende, I’ve settled into a rhythm that feels like a natural fit for who I am.
Your days here will almost certainly look different—especially if you’re still in the planning stages or have just arrived. (I often tell people it takes a good six months on the ground for the dust to settle—physically, emotionally, and mentally.) But I thought I’d offer a little peek into my weekly routine, just to give you a sense of what life can look like once things start to click.
One of the beautiful things about life in Mexico is how it invites—and sometimes requires—you to slow down, be more present, and live with more intention. It’s a shift I didn’t know I needed until I was living it.
🌅 Mornings: Starting Slow and Centered
I’m usually up around 5 a.m. and start my day with meditation. This simple practice grounds me. It quiets my mind and sets a calm, focused tone for the day—whether I’m writing, consulting with clients, or simply navigating life in a new culture.
After a cup of tea, I dive into a few focused hours of work—emails, WhatsApp messages, blog writing, and supporting relocation clients making their own moves to Mexico.
Breakfast is healthy and light. Then I head up to my azotea (rooftop terrace) for a quick workout. With panoramic views of San Miguel’s old churches, colorful rooftops, and the distant mountains, it’s one of my favorite spots in the world.
And to be honest, there are days when the to-do list gets tossed out the window in favor of something spontaneous—like rolling out of bed and heading straight for the countryside to soak in one of the area’s amazing hot springs.
🌇 Afternoons: Work, Wander, and Connection
Most afternoons include more work—client calls, research, and personalized guidance for folks transitioning into life here. But I always carve out time to walk into town.
Whether I’m picking up a few things from favorite tiendas, grabbing lunch at a café, attending an intercambio (a Spanish-English language exchange with gringos and locals), or simply wandering the cobblestone streets, it’s my time to savor the color, texture, and rhythm of everyday life.
Even after all these years, it hasn’t gotten old. The small daily rituals—greeting shopkeepers, chatting in Spanish, bumping into friends—create a strong sense of community. The kindness and warmth of the Mexican people still moves me.
🌙 Evenings: Simplicity and Solitude
After my afternoon siesta (yes, that’s a sacred part of the day now), I check messages one last time and ease into a quiet evening.
Dinner might be something simple at home, a meal shared with a friend, or an evening out enjoying San Miguel’s vibrant music scene. Live music is easy to find here—and always feels like a gift.
The vibe here invites you to unplug, unwind, and be present.
💬 Thinking of Making the Move?
My life here is far more relaxed and connected than it ever was in the U.S. I still work hard, but the pace is gentler. I walk more, talk more, rest more.
I’ve adapted—and continue to adapt—to a culture that values presence over productivity, and relationships over efficiency.
If you’re dreaming or planning a move, know this:
You’ll find your own rhythm in time. Some routines will feel familiar. Others will stretch and shape you in ways you didn’t expect.
Living in Mexico isn’t just about changing your location. It’s about changing how you live.

And that shift?
It gradually reveals a life more expansive, more grounded, and more beautiful than you could have imagined—one that only becomes clear once you’ve stepped fully into it.
Que tenga un bonito día,
