The Inclusivity of Mexico
In the 47 years I’ve traveled throughout Mexico, and especially during the eight years I’ve spent living here as a full-time resident, I’ve come to deeply appreciate the country’s relationship-oriented culture. In Mexico, people are valued more than goals or objects, and this mindset fosters a genuine sense of community and connection.
I am always amazed that the Mexican culture is so inherently inclusive, creating a welcoming environment for people from all walks of life. It celebrates diversity, drawing from a rich blend of indigenous traditions and Spanish colonial influences. This fusion has shaped a society that is open, adaptable, and extraordinarily hospitable.
I see this inclusivity in action nearly every day. For example, when I visit a restaurant, I’m often greeted by Mexican diners with a friendly “Buen Provecho” (or simply “Provecho”), which means “enjoy your meal.” It’s a small gesture, but it always comes with a warm smile, and I’ve adopted it myself. When I pass by and say “Provecho,” I’m always met with a grateful “Gracias.”
In everyday life, the spirit of inclusivity is equally evident. I’ve noticed that when a new passenger boards a colectivo (a small bus), the other passengers greet them warmly with a “Buenos días,” even though they’re complete strangers. This sense of community extends beyond the streets—I’ve seen it in the classroom as well. While teaching English to Mexican children, I’m constantly impressed by how they make sure no one is left behind, helping classmates whenever they need assistance.
This sense of inclusivity transcends cultural boundaries. Whether it’s offering a hand to someone who’s fallen on the cobblestones in San Miguel de Allende (too many times for me I’m afraid) or offering a smile to someone from a different background, Mexicans consistently show an open-heartedness and kindness that feels much rarer in other cultures.
I love that Mexico is a place where people of all backgrounds, identities, and cultures can find acceptance and a true sense of home. The warmth and hospitality that define Mexican culture make it a truly inclusive society, inviting everyone to join in its celebrations, embrace its proud history, and share in its laughter—because Mexicans laugh easily, and often, and invite everyone to do the same.
